Disability Insurance

Disability insurance offers monetary compensation to the insured in case of illness or injury preventing them from working. The cash benefit typically ranges from 50% to 70% of the individual's income. To encourage a return to work, the insurance company caps the payment at 70% of income.
When individuals pay the premiums themselves, the benefits are usually received tax-free. However, if the premiums are covered by the employer, the benefits become taxable as ordinary income.
